Ukraine was also attacking about 60 miles east, across the plains near the town of Velyka Novosilka, Hanna Maliar, a Ukrainian deputy defense minister, said on Thursday. Russia has laid mine belts and dug layer upon layer of defensive trenches to repel Ukrainian attacks. Military analysts have long anticipated that Ukraine will focus on this area to try to sever Russia’s connection between Crimea and Eastern Ukraine.
